Green As Grass complete an unusual project
When you want to make the most of your outdoor space but the site just isn’t suitable for a natural lawn, artificial turf is the ideal surface. In this article we’re looking at a project that took artificial turf to new heights.
Natural turf needs four things to become a thriving lawn. Sunlight, Water, Soil and maintenance.
Recently, Green As Grass were contacted by an organisation who wanted to transform the balcony of one of London’s skyscrapers into a space for relaxation and entertainment. Because the terrace in question had neither soil nor water and was in partial shade, no amount of maintenance could sustain a natural lawn. And so they asked us to install our Manhattan Artificial Grass.
The first challenge for this project was transporting the artificial turf and its base layers all the way to the 48th floor of the Arena Towers in Canary Wharf. Our fitters are very good at problem solving – after all they have worked in places with very little room to manoeuvre so they soon made full use of the service lifts.
Next came a challenge the boys don’t often encounter – strong winds. It’s pretty breezy when you are nearly 150 metres above ground level. Our fitters had to make sure that the grass didn’t blow away while they were working with it. They also needed to ensure that it is fitted very precisely and firmly fixed to the building. The grass coped well with summer breezes but we’re only weeks away from autumn and winter storms and that definitely needed to be taken into account.
On the plus side ….just look at those views! What a wonderful place to escape the hustle and bustle of the City. I envy all of those people who’ll be using this unique outdoor space.
