I have heard tell that artificial grass can get a bit – well – whiffy in a garden for dogs. There are 2 possible reasons for this.

First of all, the installation is crucial. There must be adequate drainage to allow the urine to soak into the soil where it can be broken down by bacteria.

Secondly, the quality of the artificial grass itself. Artificial turf comes in a wide range of qualities to sit different projects and budgets. In very general terms, it consists of many tufts of faux grass melded to a backing material – just like interior carpets. If the backing material is super-absorbent it will soak up and hold onto pet urine and that’s where the smell comes from.

If you are planning to install artificial grass in a garden for dogs, look for one of the newer products with a PU backing. It’s less absorbent and although it needs careful installation, it does have several advantages over some of the budget grades.

PU backing holds the tufts much more securely than a latex backed artificial grass. That means that the product is more robust, more durable and will cope better with all of those rough and tumble doggy games.
