Artificial grass is very durable but you must take good care of your investment. In this blog, we will teach you how to clean your artificial grass with a few tips and tricks!
Artificial grass is very low maintenance and you do not have to do a lot to keep it looking good all year round. However, to increase the lifespan of your artificial grass, you will need to take care of your lawn as using the wrong products and materials could damage the turf and reduce longevity.
Debris on your artificial grass
Get into a weekly habit of picking up debris on your lawn such as branches, twigs, and any litter. Try and keep the grass free of smaller debris too such as leaves and any seeds that may have fallen from nearby trees. This can easily be brushed away with a soft-bristled broom or with a leaf blower. Cleaning little and often is the key here as you do not want the leaves to start decomposing on your lawn as that will be a much more challenging job!
Food and drink on your artificial grass
Water is your best friend for any spillages on your artificial lawn. With a liquid spill, blot the stain with a cloth or paper towel first. A rinse with a hose and then a brush with a broom should do the trick! You do not need any chemicals or cleaning products as this could damage your grass.
Pets on your artificial grass
Unfortunately, your pet may still use the artificial grass as a toilet so if this is the case, you can try using one of the following solutions if you do not have an area with gravel or soil which could be their outdoor litter box instead.
- If it is solid, use a bag and a scoop just as you would when you take your dog for a walk!
- If it is liquid waste it is best to clean the area using water – give it a quick hose down, and it will drain through. Nice and simple!
If you have a pet that sheds a lot of hair, the best thing to do is brush or rake the grass regularly because otherwise, you may find the hair could block your drainage system.
Snow and ice on your artificial grass
The best thing to do with snow is to let it melt so it will easily drain away. If you do need to remove large amounts of snow, you should ideally use a non-metal broom as using a metal shovel could cause damage to your artificial grass. The best idea would be to use a plastic snow shovel! We also recommend that you do not use salt on your artificial grass as the residue can cause a blockage in the drainage.
You do not need to worry about your artificial grass becoming damaged by frost as the product is very strong and durable ensuring it will not snap even in very cold weather conditions.
Vacuuming your artificial grass
We do not recommend using a domestic vacuum on your artificial turf. The suction can remove the sand used when installing your artificial grass plus if the grass is slightly wet from rainfall, your vacuum may become damaged. Using a broom is always your best bet to getting your grass looking in top condition!
Weed membrane installation
Before the artificial grass is installed, we lay our weed membrane which prevents weeds from growing up through the grass. The membrane creates a barrier between the weeds and the turf. Resulting in no more weeds in your new low-maintenance garden!
